Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a gun violence incident that erupted on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park while officers were shutting down a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.
Background
Sacramento County law enforcement first arrived at the park just after 6:30 in the evening after obtaining information of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Soon after, another report was received about an alleged brawl unfolding at Howe Park.
A sheriff's airship conducted an aerial sweep but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Regardless, deputies found that an enormous crowd had come together at the location without any permit or approval.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by surrounding the park and making announcements telling the assembled crowd to disperse at once. Roughly 15 minutes were read more allowed for people to comply.
Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition cut through the air. The rapid succession of shots sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Deputies immediately began looking for those injured.
Four Gunshot Victims
By the time the scene was secured, four individuals were identified as having gunshot wounds. All four — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their 20s at the time of the incident — were rushed to Sacramento area hospitals. Hospital staff confirmed that two were treated for serious injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. According to authorities, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire were called to the scene and helped care for shooting victims before they were taken to the hospital.
What Investigators Found
Most of the gunfire was confirmed to have happened near the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the local Home Depot at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Law enforcement investigators found additional spent rounds along Cottage Way. Round impacts were noted in the iron fence near the nearby Home Depot. These findings indicated that one of the gunmen had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. The store itself was temporarily locked down for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives stayed at the location throughout the night.
Suspects Detained
Details gathered over police scanner frequencies established that a suspect Kia had been stopped in the Solano County area. Four individuals were stopped and detained. Law enforcement units were sent to retrieve the detainees to return them to Sacramento for processing in Sacramento County. Video reviewed at the scene revealed that two shooters had been involved.
